Azimuth Watches

Azimuth is a relatively new watch company, founded in 2003, but they already have created a variety of intriguing designs. Their designs span the watchmaking spectrum from their Militare - 1 collection which are inspired by the pilot watches from World War II, to their angular and quirky Gauge Mecha-1 BMF designs. My favorite has to be the SP-1 Mechanique concept watch. The so-called spaceship watch has a rendition of Earth as seen from space which rotates every sixty seconds. It has a jumping hour display powered by a Unitas 6497 movement. It has a rotating disc which is at the base of a minute hand. The dial is decorated with small dots to resemble stars and the 45mm stainless steel case is capped by a domed sapphire crystal.

Italian accessories company Breil Milano has opened a new flagship store at 148 Spring Street in Soho, New York City. The stores is one in a series of flagship stores which Breil Milano is opening luxury cities. The New York store is located in a historical building but the boutique has a modern contemporary style which combines warm color tones with bronze and green tints. The entire left-hand wall is covered by original tiles by Dutch artist Edwin Vlassenroot who also sculpted lampshades in copper.A more private space has been created at the lower level where jewelry and watches are available to the public. Icelink Bikini Watch

Diamond-laden watch brand Icelink has launched something a little lighter for summer. The latest version of their six-timezone watch is called Bikini and features 12 brilliant diamond stars set into the intersection of the hours and places on the steel case. The watch has a bracelet exchange mechanism so the band can be easily swapped out. The retail price of the 6Timezone Bikini starts at $8,500.

Most Valuable Patek Philippes on Exhibit

Patek Philippe, maker of the most coveted watches in the world, is staging an unprecedented exhibit of the most valuable timepieces from its collection here in the U.S. The exhibit, featuring hundreds of items including priceless pieces from the Patek Philippe Museum in Geneva, is on display at Tiffany & Co.'s Fifth Avenue flagship through Saturday evening; next month it travels to the Beverly Wilshire Four Seasons in Los Angeles, running from May 16 - 18.

With Patek Philippes fetching record prices at auction, this is a rare opportunity to view timepieces that the likes of Christie's would kill to get their hands on. The exhibits culled from the company's 169-year history include rare pocket watches and the first Swiss wristwatch ever made.

LVMH Picks Up Hublot

Luxury behemoth LVMH has a new watchmaker in their growing watches and jewelry unit. They have announced that they will acquire Switzerland's Hublot watch group from the founder Carlo Crocco and a firm controlled by Jean-Claude Biver, who's managed the brand since 2004.

LVMH already owns several successful watch brands including TAG Heuer, Zenith, Dior Montres and Louis Vuitton watches. LVMH has announced plans to increase the brand's profile in Asia and Japan and expand retail distribution. Currently the watches are sold in 300 stores worldwide. Hopefully they won't dilute the brand too much, part of Hublot's power is that that they do a particular type of big beefy watch, the Big Bang, so well. The Hublot fans on the Time Zone Hublot forum definitely are excited about this move for Hublot.

$300,000 "Day&Night" Watch Doesn't Tell the Time

One of the first releases in the DNA of Famous Legends collection by Romain Jerome was the Titanic DNA watch, featuring oxidized steel salvaged from the real Titanic. The collection is rapidly expanding with several different models now available featuring everything from rust to jewels, but perhaps one of the most noteworthy is the "Day&Night" watch. It doesn't tell the time, it just tells you whether it's day or night.

It may seem like a silly idea but it's really just a reflection of the times -- watches are less and less about actually telling the time (we all have cell phones and PDAs for that now) and more about style and luxury. The Day&Night watch sells for $300,000 and the first lot sold out in just 48 hours. Apparently there are a lot of people looking to know whether it's day or whether it's night -- from their watch.

Things to Consider When Buying a Waterproof Watch

In the market for a waterproof watch? You may have trouble finding one, considering few watches (if any) are truly and completely waterproof, and are in reality only water resistant. Water resistance is a term that can mean anything from "withstands minor splashing" to "submersible up to 100 meters," to any number of other definitions. So before you take your $5000 "water-resistant" watch into the swimming pool you may want to check on some details. Maybe it can go cannon balling with you or maybe it should stay sitting safely by your beach towel and flip flops -- either way it's something worth knowing.

Jaermann & Stubi Golf Counter Watches

Jaermann & Stübi watches have a unique feature that golfers will love, a golf counter. Their St. Andrews Link watch has a mechanical golf counter and an automatic movement. It can count a player's strokes per hole and add up the total score per round comparing it with the player's handicap. Their latest watches are the elegant St. Andrews Links and the sportier Eagle Heart. Each comes in several variations including one version of the St. Andrews which has 71 sapphires and one diamond circling the bezel.

Haimov Watches

It's the watch line creating quite a buzz ....last week at Villa in Hollywood, Lindsey Lohan was seen proudly showing off her new Haimov. With a celebrity following that includes the likes of rappers (50 Cent & Timbaland own a few), socialites (Paris is a huge fan) and athletes (Shaq shelled out $26,000 on a Haimov HM2), watch maker Igal Haimov is making a fortune off young Hollywood. Recognizable by their unique octagon shape and tricky numeric layout, Haimovs also have a convenient removable bezel. Prices range from $8,000 up to $52,000, and have more bling than you've ever seen, the HM1 style packs a whopping 21 carats! You can browse the styles online but I think you have to pop into one of the Haimov stores in Miami if you want to buy one.

Will the U.S. Economy Affect Baselworld?

Every year the watchmakers and jewelers converge on Basel, Switzerland in the spring for Baselworld and the SIHH show. It is the place where exhibitors display some of the most dazzling luxury goods in the world. But this year, fears over the U.S. economy may be dampening the usual excitement.

The show, like fashion shows, is one that looks ahead, trying to sell buyers on the goods they will want in their stores in September and October for the holiday season. Many are already predicting that the Christmas business of 2008 will be bad news for both the U.S. and Europe. The annual event has over 2,000 exhibitors and attracts around 100,000 buyers. According to Jacques Duchene, president of the BaselWorld Exhibitors Committee quoted in National Jeweler, last year was a boom year for Swiss watches: Swiss watch exports reached about $15.75 billion last year which was a 16 percent increase over the previous year, and a rise of more than 50 percent over the previous four years.

In this Reuters article, Rolf Schnyder, the chief executive of Swiss watchmaker Ulysse Nardin is quoted as saying that the slowdown in the U.S. market will generally affect the mid-range products. This reflects the general trend we have seen where luxury consumers at the top of the market are spending but those that are at the lower end of the affluence spectrum are cutting back.

For those who make watches and jewelry, bright spots can be found by looking east. Increased demand in Asia, Russia and the Middle East will likely provide most manufacturers with market growth even if other economies continue on their gloomy course. One thing that I will be curious to see is if the change in consumers will change the products. The big spenders in these markets often have particularly lavish tastes and a taste for diamond and jewel-covered watches as opposed to more subtle watches with elaborate complications. I wonder if in the next few years, the major manufacturers will be shifting their output to attract these customers.

Chopard L.U.C. XP Watch

Taking a note from the super-thin Appella watches, Chopard will be introducing the ultra-thin L.U.C XP at the Baselworld watch show. This watch uses the automatic Chopard in-house caliber L.U.C. 96HM with 29 jewels and a 70 hour power reserve. The caliber is just 3.3mm thick. The case measures 39.5mm X 6.8mm. This simply styled watch is available in rose or white gold with a slate gray dial. Very elegant.

John Banovich Wildlife Watches

Watchpedia's Watch of the Week this week led me to the news that wildlife artist John Banovich is working with the Montana Watch Company on a series of just 15 watches based on Banovich's wildlife paintings. There will be three watches each of five paintings of Africa's five big game animals, the lion, the leopard, the rhino, the Cape buffalo and the elephant. The first five were displayed at the Safari Club International's annual Reno convention and the next 10 will be custom commissions built to order using the same artwork. The scrolled detail on the watches cases and bands adds a nice Western touch. It would be great if these watches raised money for wildlife protection.

Luxury Magazine Hatched From Timepiece Mag

hr:, a magazine heretofore devoted to mechanical timepieces, is attempting to reinvent itself with a new focus on the broader category of luxury goods. The bi-monthly slick promises to deliver a readership that is 35-55, with an annual income above $650,000 and a net worth of $1 million plus, which makes sense if you've priced the cost of having your Rolex or Patek Phillipe cleaned lately.

The new focus will feature those lifestyle elements most likely to advertise heavily in the magazine; fashion, luxury cars, yachts, vacation spots and, of course, watches. As the public abandons the wearing of watches in deference to the time readout on their cell phones, the accoutrement increasing has become a jewelry choice, one acceptable within the conservative 'man code'.

Expect hr: to join the rank of quasi-catalogues of luxury gifts, somewhere between Harper's Bazaar and Condé Nast Travel, where the lines between articles and advertising is as faint as the blush on a model's cheek.
