The winemakers help you taste and choose from four barrel samples (two Cabernet Sauvignons, one Merlot, one Cabernet Franc---all Napa Valley appellation) and then talk you through the blending and hand-bottling processes right down to dipping the tops of the bottles in wax. The whole thing takes around two hours and you leave with your wine on that day.

The camp is available by advance reservation and can be open to one to 12 people per session. The Barrel Blending Day Camp at Judd's Hill has several options priced by how much wine you want to take home: $175 per person enables you to take home 3 finished bottles of wine; $325 per person results in 6 bottles; $600 is a 12-bottle adventure.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

White Rocket Wine Makes Dogs a Worthy Cause

When quality meets affordability in a wine that also speaks to your heart, I would say that is a win-win! The White Rocket Wine Company's Dog House line featuring California grown Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Grigio, Zinfandel and Chardonnay supports Guide Dogs for the Blind by donating fifty-cents of each bottle purchased to their life changing programs. Last year my colleague Deidre Woollard told you about the ambitious plan for the new facility built around the original 1885 winery south of St. Helena. Progress is proceeding apace on the project, which artfully blends avant-garde architecture with existing historic structures. The live cam is the latest addition to the Gehry plan web features, which include a project gallery and time-lapse camera showing progress to date. Hall's new 110,000-square-foot complex of six buildings, which broke ground last summer, is slated to open in 2010. Pictured above is Gehry (center) and associate Edwin Chan (left) with winery owners Kathryn and Craig Hall (right) discussing the architect's model for a new Visitor's Center, an all-glass structure supported by a "floating" trellis overhang. But sources say that the winery has been but up for sale and offers over $100 million have come in. The Barrett family is currently considering offers. Chateau Montelena makes fine estate-grown Cabernets which currently sell for $125 a bottle. The winery is also one of the oldest in the area, dating back to 1882 when Alfred L. Tubbs bought the land and built the beautiful chateau. It was in bad shape in the late 1960s when Jim Barrett and a team of investors came along and with famed winemaker Mike Grgich started producing respected wines. Montelena's second vintage, the 1973, won the tasting in Paris in 1976.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Sugar-Free Wine?

Woo hoo! Alright, here is the scoop. No calories, no carbs, yet still delicious. Last Saturday in Indiana, Chateau Thomas Winery revealed their new wine called Slender -- quite the fitting name! Although its a standard wine in most ways it is sweetened with erythritol, which is somewhat like Splenda in that it brings flavor without costly calories. Although it only retails for $10, which is obviously not top-shelf enough to compete with our usual wine highlights, a wine that brings enjoyment without the pounds is certainly worth celebrating.

[via IndyStar]

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

City Winery, New York's First Private Label Winery

City Winery is scheduled to open this fall in an unlikely place: right in the middle of Soho, New York. Intended to "celebrate passion" and "encourage the user to be sinful in a theatrical fashion," each sin (wrath, greed, gluttony, sloth, pride, envy, and lust) has its own artistic interpretation that will have you drinking your wine in the most interesting ways (the aggressive and dangerous looking pointed rim on the glass above represents wrath). Although the exact requirements of a wine to be considered at the luxury end of the spectrum are a bit hazy in my mind it seems the combination of early drinkability combined with aged character in its Cabernet makes Pennywise an affordable label with distinction. And the power and rustic beauty of the Petite Syrah is equally compelling. Don Sebastiani & Sons which markets Pennywise through The Other Guy division has certainly shown it can grow an upscale product as witnessed by the 200% increase in sales last year... sounds like Pennywise should have a more expensive nickname.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Green Wine Awards

For grape growers, vino viticulturists, syrah sippers and green gods and goddesses, the day has come when wineries both domestic and foreign can compete for glory to bring us, the consumer, the best eco-friendly wines available. The Green Wine Competition has chosen its champions from over 271 entries originating in six states and eleven foreign countries within four categories: Class I - certified biodynamically grown; Class II - organic; Class III - transitional & third party certified; Class IV - natural (international imports only). But Professor Richard Selley, of Imperial College London says that just a couple of degrees in average temperature could mean that Scotland's green expanses could support vines. Someday we could all be sipping the Loch Ness Chardonnay. But what is good news for wine does have the whisky industry if not worried then at least aware of the potential challenges for making their product in the future. The whisky makers are already looking for ways to expand production in the face of increasing demand from India and China and with a fairly limited growing area already we could see whisky prices go up dramatically over the next few years.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

David Beckham Buys Victoria A Vineyard

David and Victoria Beckham are notoriously generous with each other on their birthdays, splashing out on jewels, watches, cars and lavish vacations. Now The Sun reports that David Beckham bought Victoria her own winery in Napa and the pair will be making their own wine. Last month, the paparazzi spotted the pair along with celebrity pals, Tom Cruise, Katie Holmes, Seal, Heidi Klum, Kate Beckinsale and Len Wiseman, touring a winery. It was assumed they were just going wine tasting but apparently while winetasting, David presented Victoria with a bottle with her name on it. The couple isn't planning to go into the wine business, they will just be making their vintage for family and friends.

%Gallery-17881%

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Winderlea Vineyard and Winery

Another fine winery has opened up a tasting room in Oregon. Winderlea Vineyard & Winery, a luxury boutique winery specializing in limited production Oregon Pinot noir has opened their new tasting room on Worden Hill Road in Dundee. Owners Donna Morris and Bill Sweat retired from the business world and moved from Boston to Oregon in 2006, purchased the Goldschmidt Vineyard in the heart of the Dundee Hills and devoted themselves to creating fine Pinot noir. The inaugural 2006 vintage consists of three bottlings: 2006 Winderlea Goldschmidt Pinot noir -- a single vineyard designate from their estate vineyard, the 2006 Winderlea ANA Pinot noir -- a single vineyard designate from the highly regarded ANA vineyard adjacent to Winderlea, and the 2006 Winderlea Inaugural Reserve Pinot noir made up of fruit sourced from the neighboring ANA and Weber vineyards. Winemaker Robert Brittan formerly of Stags Leap Winery makes Winderlea wines.

Winderlea's new sustainably built 4000-square-foot tasting room includes a commercial kitchen and has solar hot water heaters and Day4 Energy photovoltaic modules to meet its energy needs. . The east and south sides of the building are made up entirely of glass and aluminum providing dramatic views over the Oregon countryside. The tasting room will be open Memorial Day through Thanksgiving on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from 11AM to 4PM. The winery will be putting on an original, one-man play, Towle's Hill, at the winery and in several cities around the U.S.

The Bundschu family collaborated with The Marsh, an award-winning San Francisco theater company, to create Towle's Hill. Told from the perspective of fourth-generation Rhinefarm steward Towle Bundschu, Towle's Hill chronicles the history of Gundlach Bundschu, while offering insight into the dynamics of family businesses, the complexities of father-son relationships and the desire to create something meaningful from a lifetime of work. Towle's Hill debuted on May 7, 2008 in San Francisco and will tour the country with performances in eight additional cities (Houston, Austin, Kansas City, Chicago, New York, Charlotte, New Orleans and Los Angeles) during June. The play tour will culminate in a Sonoma performance in September that benefits the Boys and Girls Club Valley of the Moon. More information on tickets for the performances can be found at the winery website.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

The Legacy of Robert Mondavi

One of the most famous figures in American winemaking, Robert Mondavi, died on Friday. Mondavi, who was 94, was considered "the Father of Napa" and is credited with bringing Napa Valley and California wine in general to worldwide attention and fame. When he started creating wine it was assumed that only Europe could make good wine. By studying with and partnering with some of the great wine families of Europe he created many great wines.

While the future of the Mondavi wines themselves may be in question, Mondavi's influence on modern winemaking cannot be overstated. His legacy is more than the wines that bear his name but is instead a whole new way of thinking about New World wine that has led to quality wines not just in Napa but all around the U.S. and other parts of the world. Mondavi also donated millions of dollars to the University of California at Davis, which offers many winemaking programs, and founded the the art and wine center, Copia and was committed to advancing wine education.

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments
